Kashikuwe and Chovwe have progressed to the next round of the FQM Trident Interschools Independence Tournament after coming through a competitive opening day at Kankonzhi on Friday.

Kashikuwe secured their place after recording two 1-0 victories, first defeating Musangezhi before edging Kanana in the second round.

Victor Chasongola was the match-winner in both games, scoring the decisive goal against Musangezhi before repeating the feat against Kanana to help Kashikuwe secure qualification.

Chovwe also enjoyed a winning start, defeating Kamilenda 1-0 in their opening fixture through Christopher Katambi.

Musangezhi subsequently earned a second chance after defeating Kamilenda 2-0 on penalties to finish as the best loser of the opening round.

That set up a second-round meeting with Chovwe, who secured a 1-0 win to book their place in the next stage.

Rodwell Makuwe scored the decisive goal for Chovwe. The opening day featured six matches as teams battled for the two qualification places available from the day's programme.

The tournament continues on Saturday, 19 September, with three fixtures scheduled at Jiwundu. Kankonzhi will face Mukilawatambo, Musele will take on Mbole, while Kalumbila North will meet Kambangala.

The FQM Trident Interschools Independence Tournament features 37 schools competing under the theme “A Kick for Safety”, with the finals scheduled for 17 October.
